DMCC company setup

The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre is the zone banks recognise on sight and the one that asks the most of you in return. If you trade physical commodities, that trade is worth making. If you are a consultant with a laptop, it usually is not.

What DMCC is

DMCC was created by decree in 2002 to give Dubai a home for commodities trade — gold, diamonds, precious and base metals, tea, and agricultural goods — and it built the district around that trade rather than the other way round. Jumeirah Lakes Towers is not a business park attached to a free zone; it is a working quarter of the city, towers set around three lakes, where the companies, the vaults, the assay offices and the exchanges sit within walking distance of each other.

That concentration is the product. The Dubai Diamond Exchange operates inside the zone, and so does the commodities exchange that grew up alongside it. If your business needs a counterparty, an inspection agency, a refiner or a vault, the odds are they hold a DMCC licence too, and that proximity is worth something no cost-led zone can offer at any price.

It has since widened well past commodities. Technology, financial services, professional services and e-commerce all license here, and the authority has built dedicated centres for crypto assets and for gaming. The commodities heritage is still what the zone is for, but it is no longer all it does.

02

The address requirement, stated plainly

Every DMCC company holds a registered address inside JLT, and that address is a real leased product with its own annual cost. A flexi-desk in the authority's own business centre is the entry point rather than an exemption from the rule, and your visa allocation scales with the space you take.

This is the single largest difference between DMCC and the zones most readers will have been quoted against. IFZA, Meydan, SHAMS and the northern emirates authorities will issue you a licence without putting you in a room. DMCC will not. That is not a hidden cost we are warning you about — it is the zone's design, and it is a large part of why a DMCC licence carries the weight it does with a bank.

Budget for the space before you compare the licence fees, because a comparison that leaves it out is not a comparison.

03

Who it fits, and who it does not

It fits anyone trading physical commodities — metals, stones, agricultural goods, energy — where being in the district is operationally useful rather than merely impressive. It fits businesses whose counterparties, lenders or insurers will look up the address, because DMCC is the one free zone name that needs no explaining to a compliance officer. And it fits companies that have outgrown a cost-led licence and want a Dubai address they will not have to apologise for.

It does not fit a solo consultant testing an idea. The gap between DMCC and a northern-emirates licence is not a rounding difference, and paying it for a business that will never use the district is money spent on an address. It does not fit anything needing warehousing, industrial space or a customer-facing shopfront — that is Dubai South or DAFZA. And as with every free zone, it does not substitute for the approval of a sector regulator if your activity has one.

We will say plainly when a cheaper zone does the same job for you. That is easier for us to say here than almost anywhere else on this site, because DMCC is the zone clients most often ask for by name before they have described what they do.

04

The licence, and what sits under it

A DMCC company is incorporated as a free zone entity — a single shareholder takes an establishment, several take a company, and an existing business can register a branch instead. Each comes with the trade licence, the constitutional documents, the share register and the establishment card that makes residence visas possible.

Licences are issued against activities in the usual way, and the specialist categories are where DMCC differs from a general-purpose zone: precious metals and stones, crypto assets and several regulated trading activities carry their own approvals, conditions and ongoing compliance on top of the licence itself. Those are assessed rather than processed.

If your activity is one of them, say so at the outset. A file that discloses a specialist activity from the start is a different, and much shorter, process than one that reveals it after incorporation.

05

What being an appointed channel partner changes

We file with DMCC directly rather than routing your application through another agent, so the authority's questions come back to us and get answered the same day rather than relayed.

On the specialist categories it means considerably more than that. Those files are assessed on the substance of what you are proposing, and the difference between a well-prepared application and a hopeful one is most of the outcome — the same thing that is true at DWTC, and for the same reason.

06

What it costs — and why no figure is printed here

We quote DMCC in writing, per case. The licence, the space and the visa allocation are priced together, a flexi-desk and a floor in a tower are not the same conversation, and a specialist activity with an approval attached is scoped separately rather than folded into a formation fee.

Our published free zone starting price reflects the cost-led zones and we will not borrow it for this page. If a comparison you have been shown puts DMCC next to a four-figure licence, the space has been left out of it.

DMCC suits

  • Commodities traders — metals, precious stones, energy, agricultural goods
  • Businesses whose counterparties or lenders will check the address
  • Precious metals and jewellery businesses that need the exchange and the vaults nearby
  • Crypto asset and technology businesses that want a licensed home for a regulated activity
  • Companies outgrowing a cost-led licence and ready to pay for the district

It does not suit

  • Solo consultants and early-stage businesses where cost is the deciding factor
  • Anyone who does not want, or need, a leased address in JLT
  • Businesses needing warehousing, industrial space or a customer-facing shopfront
  • Activities that answer to a sector regulator rather than to a free zone

What it costs

We quote DMCC in writing, per case — there is no headline figure on this page.

Almas publishes a confirmed starting price for free zone company setup, but it reflects the cost-led zones and it would be misleading here, where the licence, the premises and the visa allocation are priced together against what you actually need. A figure that is right for five zones and wrong for this one is worse than no figure at all.

DMCC questions we are asked

Where is DMCC?

In Jumeirah Lakes Towers, off Sheikh Zayed Road towards Dubai Marina. The zone is the district — towers around three lakes — rather than a park you drive into, which is why an address there is a working location and not just a registered one.

Do I need an office to hold a DMCC licence?

Yes. Every DMCC company holds a registered address inside JLT, and it is a real leased product with an annual cost. A flexi-desk in the authority's own business centre is the entry point, not an exemption, and your visa allocation scales with the space you take. This is the main thing that separates DMCC from the zones you have probably been quoted against.

How much does a DMCC licence cost?

We quote it in writing, per case. The licence, the space and the visa allocation are priced together, and a specialist activity with an approval attached is scoped separately. Our published free zone starting price reflects the cost-led zones and we do not borrow it for this page — if you have seen DMCC compared against a four-figure licence, the space was left out.

DMCC or IFZA?

Cost against standing, and whether you will use the district. IFZA issues a credible Dubai licence without putting you in a room and is the right answer for most consultancies and small service companies. DMCC costs materially more, requires a JLT address, and buys you a name a bank recognises on sight plus proximity to the commodities trade. If your business will never touch either of those, IFZA is the honest recommendation and we will make it.

Can I trade gold or diamonds through a DMCC company?

That is the zone it was built for, and the Dubai Diamond Exchange operates inside it. Precious metals and stones are a specialist licence category rather than an ordinary one: additional approvals, conditions and ongoing compliance apply, and the file is assessed rather than processed. Tell us at the outset if this is your activity — disclosed from the start it is a much shorter process than disclosed afterwards.

Can I open a UAE business bank account with a DMCC licence?

A DMCC licence is among the easier free zone profiles to bank, which is a real part of what the higher cost buys. It is not a guarantee: approval sits with the bank's compliance team and turns on your activity, your source of funds and your own background. We will tell you upfront if we think a profile is going to struggle, whatever the licence says.

Is Almas an authorised DMCC partner?

Yes. Almas is an appointed channel partner of DMCC and files directly with the authority rather than through an intermediary. We hold the same status with every other authority on our free zone list, which is why we are able to tell you when DMCC is the wrong fit.
