DWTC Free Zone company setup
The Dubai World Trade Centre free zone is the one that licenses the things other zones do not: events, family offices and virtual assets, from an address on Sheikh Zayed Road.

What DWTC Free Zone is
Dubai World Trade Centre has been the city's exhibition and conference estate since the 1970s. The free zone is much newer — established in 2015 — and it sits inside that estate on Sheikh Zayed Road, in the district that runs the trade shows, the conference halls and the towers around them.
It was built to license the businesses that congregate around that activity, and it shows in the licence list. Alongside the ordinary commercial, professional and general trading licences, DWTC issues dedicated licences for event management, e-commerce, family offices and virtual assets. That last pair is what makes it distinctive: very few UAE free zones will license a family office or a virtual asset business as a defined category rather than shoehorning it into a consultancy licence.
The address is part of what people are buying. A Sheikh Zayed Road registered office in the World Trade Centre district reads differently to a counterparty, an investor or a bank than an address in an outlying business park, and for advisory firms and investment structures that is a real consideration rather than vanity.
Who it fits, and who it does not
It fits event and exhibition businesses, which is where it started and where its operational logic is strongest — organisers, production companies, stand builders and the agencies around them are licensed by an authority that runs the venue. It fits advisory firms, investment holding structures and family offices, which get a defined licence category and an address that matches the work. And it fits businesses in the virtual asset space that want a jurisdiction with an actual framework rather than an improvised one.
It does not fit anything that needs a warehouse or a factory floor; there is none here. It does not fit a founder whose only criterion is the lowest licence cost, because a central Dubai address is not the cheap option and never has been.
On virtual assets specifically, be careful with what you read elsewhere. That category is regulated, additional approvals apply beyond the free zone licence, and the requirements are real ones about capital, controls and fit-and-proper persons. Any firm that tells you a crypto business can be licensed as quickly and simply as a consultancy is not describing the same process. We will tell you honestly whether your case is one to pursue.
The seven licences
DWTC issues seven licence types: commercial, professional, general trading, e-commerce, event management, family offices and virtual assets. The activity list beneath them runs to well over a thousand entries and multiple activities can sit under one licence where they are compatible.
Companies are formed as a free zone establishment with a single shareholder, a free zone company with several, or a branch of an existing UAE mainland or foreign company. The branch route is the one advisory groups most often want and most often overlook — it lets an existing entity operate here without creating a separate corporate history to maintain.
The specialised categories carry their own conditions. Family offices and virtual assets in particular are approved against the substance of what you are proposing, not just the form of the application, and the diligence is proportionate to that.
What being an appointed channel partner changes
For a straightforward commercial or professional licence, it means the file is submitted by us and the authority's questions come back to us. For the specialised categories it means considerably more, because those files are assessed rather than processed, and the difference between a well-prepared application and a hopeful one is most of the outcome.
It also means we will tell you when DWTC is not the answer. We hold appointments with every authority on our free zone list, so if what you actually need is a low-cost consultancy licence, we are not going to sell you a Sheikh Zayed Road address to get there.
What it costs
Quoted in writing, per case. Our published free zone starting price reflects the cost-led zones and it is not a fair opening figure for DWTC, so we do not put it on this page.
The variables that move a DWTC quote are the licence category, the activity list and whether you need a physical office in the district or a registered address. For the family office and virtual asset categories, the approval work itself is a material part of the engagement and we scope it separately rather than folding it into a formation fee.
DWTC or one of the cost-led zones?
If your business is an ordinary consultancy or trading company, the honest answer is usually that a cost-led zone does the same job for less, and we will say so. What you gain at DWTC is the address, the specialised licence categories and an authority whose approvals carry weight with counterparties who look at these things.
Where that is worth paying for: raising money, managing other people's, operating in a regulated category, or running an events business inside the estate that hosts the events. Where it is not: a two-person agency that needs a licence and a bank account.
The bank account conversation is worth having in parallel either way, because the licence category you choose changes which banks will look at you — and in the virtual asset space, changes it a great deal.

What it costs
We quote DWTC in writing, per case — there is no headline figure on this page.
Almas publishes a confirmed starting price for free zone company setup, but it reflects the cost-led zones and it would be misleading here, where the licence, the premises and the visa allocation are priced together against what you actually need. A figure that is right for five zones and wrong for this one is worse than no figure at all.
DWTC questions we are asked
When was the DWTC free zone established?
2015, by decree. The Dubai World Trade Centre itself is far older — it has been the city's exhibition and conference estate since the 1970s — but the free zone that licenses companies inside it is recent.
What licences does DWTC Free Zone issue?
Seven: commercial, professional, general trading, e-commerce, event management, family offices and virtual assets, with well over a thousand activities beneath them. The last three are what distinguish it from most UAE free zones.
Can DWTC license a crypto or virtual asset business?
It has a defined virtual assets licence category, which is more than most free zones offer. It is a regulated category: additional approvals apply, and the requirements around capital, controls and the people involved are real. It is not comparable to obtaining a consultancy licence, and we will give you an honest read on your case before you spend anything.
Can I set up a family office at DWTC?
Yes — it is one of the seven licence categories, rather than something improvised out of a consultancy licence. Applications are assessed against the substance of what you are proposing, so the preparation matters more than it does for an ordinary commercial licence.
How much does a DWTC Free Zone licence cost?
We quote it in writing per case. The category, the activity list and whether you need physical office space in the district all move the figure, and our published free zone starting price reflects the cost-led zones rather than this one — so we do not repeat it here.
Do I get a Sheikh Zayed Road address with a DWTC licence?
The free zone sits in the Dubai World Trade Centre district on Sheikh Zayed Road, and that is where a licensed company is registered. Whether you also take physical space in the district is a separate decision that affects the quote.
